After pregnancy left mum bed-ridden and struggling with clutter

Dennis and Michelle are a young couple trying to raise their growing family in a high-rise apartment.

But that's become very difficult when apartment is bursting at the seams with clutter.

Their two-bedroom apartment was suitable when Dennis and Michelle were a couple, but now as a family of four their apartment is cramped. But like a lot of young families right now, they can't afford to upgrade and move somewhere bigger.

Michelle also struggled with a problematic pregnancy which left her bed-ridden and unable to manage their home.

Dennis and Michelle didn't see eye to eye on their clutter issue.

Michelle said they "needed help desperately" while Dennis didn't see state of their home as such an urgent matter.

"I'm a little bit more free and I don't mind if things are a little bit messy," he told the camera.

He told the Space Invaders team that their issue was "too little space" rather than "too much stuff."

But Dennis did admit that the clutter did cause conflict between the couple.

A lot of the clutter was stored in their home office or "dumping ground" as it had become known. Holiday decorations, DVDs, electric scooters, Denis' Transformer collectables — you name it, it was in the home office.

While Denis said his Transformer collection was "under control", the Space Invaders team needed to help him get it under control for real.

Denis had over 600 Transformer collectables.

Treasure hunter Lucas Callaghan was able to help Dennis choose just a few Transformers that meant something to him.

With a bit of an extra push from Peter, Dennis finally culled his collection, allowing for a lot more space in the home office.

Cherie made the most of the small space with smart storage solutions and added extra bench space.

She chose light colours to open up the tight space and featured a few of Dennis' Transformer collectables as décor pieces.

When Peter asked the couple how their living space was working for them, Michelle had a blunt answer.

"It's not," she said.

"I'm on maternity leave so I'm home a lot with the kids. I feel like I'm chasing my tail. It's too hard to find things."

The dining room was one of the things that was too hard to find.

It wasn't a distinct living space and just got lost among all the clutter.

Cherie made the dining room stand out, by choosing chairs with a pop of colour.

She also swapped out the old square dining table for a new round dining table that allowed for more room in the small space and still fit the family of four.

By adding a rug under the table it also created a specific dining 'zone' for the family.

Peter pinpointed their clutter issue and said it boiled down to a disconnect between Dennis and Michelle.

"This apartment is jam-packed but the real clutter here is that these two are not on the same page at all," Peter told the cameras.

The Space Invaders team began tackling that problem and moved 126 boxes from their two-bedroom apartment to a nearby storage warehouse.

"This warehouse is about five times the size of Dennis and Michelle's apartment, yet their stuff has almost filled the place," Peter said.

By using a bright colour scheme, Cherie brought life to the living room, creating a modern, fresh space.

The use of shelving also maximised the space available.

"This spaces looks a lot bigger now," Cherie said.

"We've moved everything off the floors and utilised the walls."

Dennis and Michelle were both speechless when their decluttered and renovated space was revealed to them.

Back at the warehouse Peter discovered it wasn't just Dennis who had a sizeable collection that was contributing to their clutter issues.

Michelle had a nearly 1800-bottle nail polish collection.

Peter knew it would be easy to get Michelle to let go of the physical items, but he needed her to let go of the emotional baggage too.

Michelle started painting her nails to de-stress but after continuing to put pressure on herself during motherhood, the collection grew out of control.

She admitted that a lot of her stress was due to "mum guilt".

Peter and Michelle quickly reduced the size of her nail polish collection from 1780 to just 49.

New modern tiles were placed over the old kitchen tiles to spruce up the room.

They grey paint gave the apartment a contemporary feel.

But it was a bit of a process to get to the right colour.

During the renovations Cherie changed the paint colour after one coat had already been applied to the walls.

She is a perfectionist but that's why the final result was so amazing.

Dennis and Michelle had to tackle their clutter issue together.

With Peter's help they powered through items like their children's toys, clothing, books and DVDs and cleared out a massive amount of their belongings.

Michelle was moving forward with the declutter process a lot faster than Dennis.

Peter hoped that Dennis could see the gravity of the situation they were in.

A sleek white kitchen gave the apartment a modern feel and helped open up the space.

Cherie tied the living spaces together by adding the same splash back in the kitchen and home office.

Dennis and Michelle were particularly excited by Cherie's surprise addition to their kitchen — a coffee machine.

"You're awesome Cherie," Denis exclaimed.

Vertical storage in the laundry gave everything it's own spot.

"This is my dream," Michelle said.

Dennis was finally catching up to Michelle.

He was letting go of way more items than he was at the beginning of the process.

The couple sorted through the enormous pile of children's toys, many of which they chose to donate.

"Watching these two sort out their stuff tells me they're on the same page," Peter told the camera.

"The job isn't over but we're on the right track."

Their daughter Monique was over the moon with her new bedroom.

"I love it," she exclaimed.

The bedroom was bursting with fun and now had enough room for both Monique and her brother Darcy to share the space.

Cherie utilised the space and fit in a desk for Monique to use as she goes through school.

Dennis and Michelle's master bedroom, barely had enough space for all their stuff let alone eight-month old Darcy's cot too.

It was a space Michelle felt she couldn't get on top of during her tough pregnancy.

"There was no time to stop and reset and get things where they should be," Michelle told the cameras.

The Space Invaders team transformed the master bedroom into a tranquil and romantic space.

Dennis and Michelle were amazed by the results of the entire declutter and renovation.

They managed to reduce their belongings from 126 boxes down to just 39. In total, the amount of stuff they decluttered ended up being $31,248 worth of donations to the Salvation Army.

The renovation was also assessed by a property expert who said it added $90,000 of value to the apartment.

Both Dennis and Michelle were blown away by the transformation and what the Space Invaders team had done for them.

"Absolutely life-changing to have this organised space," Michelle said.

"It means the world to have our space decluttered and worry-free."
