Reuters, Bangalore, September 28-On Tuesday, the Indian drug regulator allowed vaccine manufacturer Serum Institute to recruit children aged 7-11 to participate in the trial of the COVID-19 vaccine from the US drugmaker Novavax (NVAX.O) as the country prepares to protect children from the novel Coronavirus.

This South Asian country has injected more than 870 million doses of vaccines for adults of its nearly 1.4 billion population.

A subject expert panel of the Central Pharmaceutical Standards Control Organization said: "After detailed review, the committee recommended that subjects in the 7 to 11 age group be recruited in accordance with the agreement."

The Serum Institute has tested its COVID-19 vaccine Covovax, a domestic version of Novavax vaccine, in the age group of 12-17 years, and provided safety data for the first 100 participants.

The Novavax vaccine has not yet been approved by Indian health authorities. Earlier this month, the head of the Serum Institute, Adar Poonawalla, said that he expects Covovax to be approved for use in people under the age of 18 in January or February next year.

So far, only the drug maker Zydus Cadila (CADI.NS) DNA COVID-19 vaccine has been approved for emergency use in India and can be used in adults and children 12 years and older.
